Materials

• Yarn in two colors required:
Color A: used as a background
Color B: used to form the picture
• Additional Supplies: tapestry needle, scissors
• Hooksize: for an average gauge use 4mm.
Exact yardage will depend on yarn brand and personal tension.

Gauge

Your gauge will affect final size and yarn usage. I advise you to make a swatch of at least 20x20cm (8x8inch) so you know what you gauge is with the yarn you like to use. Then measure in the center of the swatch how many stitches there are in 10x10 cm (4x4 inch). This way you can also aim on the size of the pillowcase you like. If you like the project to be slightly bigger, you can choose a bigger hook size and/or use heaver yarn.
Your Gauge
Stitches Rows Estimated project size in cm Estimated project size in inch
18 20 39 x 34 cm. 15 x 13 inch.
16 18 44 x 37 cm. 17 x 15 inch.
14 16 50 x 42 cm. 20 x 17 inch.
12 14 59 x 48 cm. 23 x 19 inch.
11 13 64 x 52 cm. 25 x 20 inch.

Yarn Requirements (Estimated)

For an average gauge of 14 sts × 16 rows per 10 × 10 cm, Project size: approx. 50.71 × 42.5 cm (20.29 × 17 inches)!

IMPORTANT: This measurement are for one side only!!

• Total yarn: approx. 260–280 meters (290–310 yards) DK / Light Worsted
Color breakdown:
• Dark color: approx. 20–22% of total yardage
→ ≈ 55–65 meters (≈ 60–70 yards)
• Light color: approx. 78–80% of total yardage
→ ≈ 205–225 meters (≈ 225–245 yards)
As a guideline, this equals approximately:
• 0.5 skein of 100 g DK yarn (± 200–240 m / 220–260 yd per skein), per color. Depending on brand and individual tension.
Using a smaller hook size will reduce overall yarn usage; a larger hook or looser tension may increase it.

How to Start

We begin with a foundation row (row 0) in the light color: Begin with a foundation chain of 70 chains, (67 pattern stitches + 2 border stitches + 1 turning chain). Start the return row in the 2nd stitch.
Work one row of single crochet back to the beginning before starting row 1 of the mosaic pattern.
At the end of the pattern at row 67 you have one side of the pillowcase. You should make 2 of them to complete the pattern.
