Greenbrier Knit Capelet
Greenbrier Knit Capelet
Designed by Marly Bird.
Wrap your shoulders in woodland-inspired lace and texture. Greenbrier pairs the delicate Rooted Trellis and Budding Leaves stitch patterns with nupps, twisted cables, decorative wreath-stitch edges, and a lacy border. The changing stitch patterns make this an engaging project for knitters who enjoy watching intricate details unfold.
Skill level: Intermediate.
Construction: Worked back and forth in rows on a circular needle to accommodate the stitches. The lacy border is worked lengthwise and joined to the capelet body as you go. Written instructions and charts are provided.
Finished measurements: 17” x 47¾“ (43 x 121.5 cm) after blocking, not including the lacy border.
Yarn: Forbidden Fiber Co. Fortitude DK (100% superwash merino; 275 yd / 251 m per 113 g hank), 3 hanks in Billy is Lost in the Woods Again. Allow 825 yd (approximately 753 m), based on the recommended three hanks.
Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm), 24” (61 cm) circular needle, or size needed for gauge. Pointed needle tips are helpful for the nupps and lace decreases.
Gauge: 22 stitches and 22 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Rooted Trellis after blocking; 25 stitches and 32 rows = 4” (10 cm) before blocking. Wash and block your swatch: blocked gauge is the priority. Changes in gauge affect finished size and yarn requirements.
Notions: Removable stitch markers, tapestry needle, two cable needles, scissors, tape measure, and blocking supplies; blocking wires are helpful for the lace.
Helpful notes: Work nupps loosely so they can be closed comfortably on the following row. With hand-dyed yarn, alternate two skeins every two rows to blend color differences. Block carefully to open the lace and reveal the finished texture.
