The design of this hat is a variation of a motif that originated in Selbu, Norway and then traveled to Shetland where it has been used for many generations in a wide variety of knitting patterns. As I was working on it however, I felt the colors and references to nature reminded me of the architectural designs of Charles Sumner Greene and his brother Henry Mather Greene who were influential architects during the early 20th century. Their designs are prime examples of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, and their work inspired many architects on the West Coast, particularly in California. The Craftsman Bungalow was a predominant style that consisted of carefully handcrafted details which were often inspired by nature and influenced everything from stained glass, light fixtures and even custom textiles.
