Halvis is a lightweight sweater with a generous cut around the body that works perfectly in a yarn with a little drape. The length of the body is very slightly cropped (but easy to adjust, with clear guidance given in pattern), making it great for transitional weather and layering. Three-quarter-length sleeves keep your hands free for more knitting. Importantly, the interesting construction and stripes keep it an engaging project, while being made up in simple stocking stitch. The body is worked flat on circular needles, where the 3-row stripes are just skinny enough to leave almost no ends to weave in, because you slide the stitches down to start at the end of the needles where you last left off, rather than cutting the yarn between stripes. Plus, 3-row stripes allow the corrugated ribbing (used to finish the bottom edge and neckline) to slot in perfectly, thanks to that old knitting rule of picking up 2 stitches in every 3 rows. Sleeves are worked in the round, with the decreases running decoratively along the top, rather than underneath.

This pattern is closely related to my Visser sweater pattern in terms of construction, but uses 4ply/fingering yarn, rather than DK/light worsted.

SIZE
XS (S, M, L, XL, XXL)
Sample is a Size M
Designed to be worn with 35cm - 40cm/ 13¾” - 15¾” positive ease around bust. Because of the large amount of ease around the bust, sizes go up in smaller increments. It is recommended that you go with a smaller amount of ease with the larger sizes.

MEASUREMENTS
Body circumference: 125 (128, 131, 133, 137, 140)cm/49½ (50½, 51¾, 52¾, 54, 55)”
Top of shoulder to bottom edge: 52 (53, 54, 56, 58, 60)cm/20½ (20¾, 21¼, 22¼, 22¾, 23½)”
Lower Body (underarm to bottom edge): 23 (24, 25, 25.5, 26, 27)cm/9¼ (9½, 9¾, 10, 10¼, 10¾)”
Sleeves (underarm to cuff): 25 (25, 25, 27, 27, 27)cm/10 (10, 10, 10¾, 10¾, 10¾)”
Cuff circumference: 20 (20, 23, 25, 27, 30)cm/7¾ (7¾, 9, 9¾, 11, 12)”

YARN
The Knitting Goddess, 4ply BFL, silk and alpaca (4ply/fingering weight; 60% Bluefaced Leicester, 20% mulberry silk, 20% baby alpaca; 400m/437yds per 100g skein)
Yarn A: Silver x 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3)
Yarn B: Denim x 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3)

Colour Choosing Note: If substituting colours, keep Yarn A the lighter/more subdued and Yarn B the darker/more punchy to enhance the optical effect of the corrugated rib and to keep the cast-off edgings in a colour that will show dirt less.

GAUGE
26 stitches x 42 rows/rounds = 10cm x 10cm/4” x 4” over st st after blocking. You need to be able to get the same gauge working flat and in the round.

Gauge note: Row/Round gauge is important in this sweater, as body is knitted sideways, so the rows affect the fit.

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
3.25mm (US3) 100cm circular needles - you will use them to knit the body flat and to magic loop the sleeves (80cm will work too). Add 40cm circs and DPNs in same size, if you are averse to magic looping.

Always use needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

NOTIONS
smooth waste yarn for provisional cast-on (optional)
