This novel project involves knitting and felting I-cord and then coiling the I-cord into bowls, sewing it as you go with a silk yarn. The pattern includes 3 options for a sewing stitch and instructions for 3 different size bowls.

Multiple strands of yarn are held together to knit the I-cord. Any feltable yarn from lace weight to bulky weight can be incorporated. The pattern provides guidance on how to choose yarn combinations considering both color and weight. You will be changing yarn combinations every 12-24” of I-cord length.

Calculating yardage needed for this project is difficult to do beforehand because you will use a variety of different yarns of different weights for different sections of the I-cord. Also, part of the fun is deciding which combination of yarns you will use as you go.

The following should give you a rough estimate of the amount of yarn involved. You will be knitting the I-cord with a combination of yarn weights equivalent to 3 strands of worsted weight yarn. If the entire project were done in worsted weight yarn, you would need the following yardage:

Small Bowl: 60 yards x 3 strands=180 yards
Medium Bowl: 135 yards x 3 strands= 405 yards
Large Bowl: 260 yards x 3 strands= 780 yards

The relevant gauge for this project is the row gauge:

Row Gauge: 8 rows= 4”
