This hat features a modified version of the Square Lattice pattern from Barbara Walker’s 2nd Treasury of Knitting Patterns. The ribbed brim flows into the main pattern of seed stitch sections set off by knit columns and purl rows. The crown decreases are hidden in the pattern. Instructions are given to work the pattern with or without a turned brim.

I used one skein of Brooklyn Tweed for the purple version without a brim, in size medium. I had a few yards remaining, so if you feel like living on the edge, go for it! Otherwise, have a second skein handy. One skein of Plymouth Galway was plenty to knit the gray version with a turned brim.

Detailed sizes as follows:

17.5 (21, 24.5) in, 44.5 (53.5, 62) cm brim circumference. 7.75 in, 19.5 cm height for 1 in brim; 10.75 in, 27.5 cm for 4 in brim

Skills needed include the basics: casting on, knit, purl, knit two together, knitting in the round, following a chart (written instructions included), using dpns.
