The mitts form a set with Happy Birthday Hat.

A pair of mitts finished just the day of my Mom’s birthday and thus the pictures feature her birthday bouquet as well.
I chose a very sunny yellow yarn with the intention of brightening up the last weeks of wearing my dark winter coat. It’s easier to change the accessories than the garment, isn’t it - especially when it’s almost the end of the season and soon a completely new outfit will be in use.

Happy Birthday mitts are a very fast and enjoyable project which can be completed in one day or two evenings. The mitts are fun to wear and they may make wonderful gifts!

Size: small, medium and large. The mitts measure approx. 6 ¼ (7, 7 ¾ )’’ / 16 (17.5, 19.5)cm unstretched around the palm just above the thumb.

Size can also be adjusted by going up or down a needle size, or by changing the yarn weight and adjusting the needles accordingly. The length can be modified by adding or deleting some rounds in stockinette.

Level: Adventurous beginner or intermediate. The mitts are knit in the round. The pattern uses basic knit and purl stitches, as well as K3in1 and cluster stitch in the border (photo tutorial included).

Needle size: US 2 ½ / 3mm DPNs or circulars if you prefer the magic loop method. Two stitch markers, waste yarn or stitch holder, tapestry needle for weaving ends.

Gauge: 20 sts and 27 rows in stockinette with US 2 ½ / 3mm needles = 10cm (4in).
I knit rather loosely so you may need to go up a needle size (or two) to get the gauge. Remember that the size of the mitts depends on the gauge. If you want the mitts larger, the gauge should be one or two stitches fewer per inch, and if you want the mitts smaller, the gauge should be one or two stitches more per inch.

Yarn suggested: 50 grams of any worsted weight yarn that meets the gauge, wool if you want the mitts very warm.
