Happy Little Tree
’Tis that time of year when the leaves have changed colours and fallen off of the trees and all that remains are the skeletal trunk and branches. The once colourful garden is now reduced to shades of brown and grey (but not the sexy ones). There is one beautiful exception, the evergreen tree. It is a reminder that even in the bleak midwinter there is life and we can not only survive, but thrive.
I have always been fascinated with the hyperbolic planes that are so easily achieved through crochet. I love how the fabric contorts and twists into spirals and coils creating new shapes and patterns. I started my fibre crafting journey with crochet, but found my passion testing the limits of what can be achieved within the more rigid constraints of knit. This piece marries the two together starting with a flat plane that turns into a conical spiral.
This happy little tree is a quick knit using only 10 grams of green worsted weight yarn, four stitch markers and a scrap of brown (about 2 feet). As the crescent shape evolves it naturally spirals and twists into a tiny tree that you can decorate for the holidays or add some pine essence and hang from your rear view mirror as an air freshener
