I have recently fallen in love with the art of spinning and had been wanting to merge my love of both spinning and knitwear design together!

After much time and patience and experimenting my first handspun shawl design is now here! I have many more handspun designs in mind and I cannot wait to get more of them out into the world!

FYI all knitting patterns/designs can be knit with handspun or commercially spun yarn there are no hard and fast rules here - however, I think patterns that are best suited for handspun have been designed to allow the knitter the most flexibility to customise and adapt a pattern to suit the yarn they have available

What you will need:

Yarn – Approx. 200gm – 656yd/600m Sport/DK Weight Handspun Yarn - Handspun used in sample is was by SpinJones – a Merino/Silk blend gradient Urchins set in Crocus and a White Polworth Top from John Arbon Textiles

If you wish to use a commercially spun yarn rather than handspun then you will need approximately 656yd/600m of a DK or Sport weight yarn.

This pattern is designed to be adaptable to any amount of yarn you have so if you have more or less than this you can continue knitting the pattern to use up as much of your yarn as you want.

Additionally you can also size down your needles and knit this pattern with fingering weight yarn or size up your needles and knit it with Worsted weight yarn, the choice is yours and you can totally adapt it to suit the yarn you have be it handspun or not.

Needles – 4mm (US 6) needles on a Long Cable to accommodate all the stitches.

Notions – 3 Stitch Markers. I would also suggest a progress keeper for the first section to help keep track of the right side of your work.

Gauge – Approx 20 sts / 4 inches in garter stitch after gentle blocking (although gauge is really not too important with this shawl as long as you are liking the fabric you are getting).

Finished Size of Shawl – 190cm (75 inches) on the longest edge & 76cm (30 inches) at the deepest point.
