Worked in the round, this trio of coordinated heart shaped basket patterns in three sizes and red, pink and white color variations makes the perfect Valentine’s Day crochet project. Each basket is attractive alone but, with matching edging, the three baskets can be made as a coordinated set that nest perfectly inside each other. Make one or all or mix and match. Fill with some chocolate hearts, kisses, or other candy for a great “from the heart” hand made one of a kind useful and reusable gift. Fill with napkins or cutlery as a decorative serving piece for your Valentine’s Day Festivities.

The large basket measures about 10” across the widest part of the base of the heart and about 8.5” from the tip of the heart to the furthest point on the upper edge of the base. Measuring across the top, because the edging flares out some, it measures almost 11.5” at the widest point.

The medium basket measures about 8.75” across the widest part of the base and about 7.25” from the tip of the heart to the furthest point on the upper edge of the base. Across the top, it measures about 10” at the widest point.

The smallest basket measures about 7.5” across the widest part of the base and about 5.75” from the tip of the heart to the furthest point on the upper edge of the base. Across the top, it measures about 8.5” at the widest point.

The sides are just under 2”, base to top of edging, for all three baskets.

Skill Level: Easy. Some experience helpful. The trickiest part is when you have to work in to the back of the chain on round 1, but, if you count your stitches and follow the instructions carefully, you should be fine and will enjoy seeing the heart shape develop as you work.

Materials:

Hook: G Hook (4.25 MM)

Note on gauge and hook size: Gauge is not that important for this project, although you want a fairly dense fabric and (other than the edging) you do not want holes between your stitches. Depending on how you crochet and the yarn you use, you may want to adjust your hook size. My gauge was 4 double crochet stitches equal about 1“and 1 round equals about 1.25”.

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver. This is my “go to” inexpensive worsted weight acrylic craft yarn for baskets and such because it has body and durability (as well as endless color choices!). You can use any type of worsted weight yarn, including cotton, but I would probably avoid very soft yarns as you don’t want your basket to be droopy. For the 3 baskets I used the following colors in the approximate yardages:

Cherry Red – 50 yards
White - 25 yards
Light Raspberry (pink) – 10 yards

Note on yardage: There are 364 yards in each skein of the Red Heart Super Saver. Three skeins of this yarn are more than enough to make several baskets.

Stitch Markers (optional)
