Known as a head shawl, this small shawl would have been used to keep the baby warm when coming home from the hospital; they are usually plain. This one has a garter-stitch centre and a border of Old Shale stitch. It is knitted in a traditional undyed 2-ply wool from sheep native to the Shetland Isles.
