Heathered Hills
This pattern was done as an exercise to see how easy making a low vision accessible pattern was and how to tag it and is now no longer available.
Heathered Hills was initially inspired by a skein of variegated DK yarn that I wanted to use but couldn’t find a pattern that I felt able to match it with. I had a coordinating solid skein in my stash, paired them up and let it see where it took me. Living in Scotland, it is hard to travel anywhere without seeing hills. The lifted stitches create the shape of the hills while the variegated colours reflect the many different tones that you see. Also, living is Scotland, cowls are the most useful thing I have as they keep me warm but I don’t have to worry about the wind whipping them off me.
The pattern is worked in the round. Although two colours are used in the pattern overall, only one colour is used at a time so no colourwork skills are required and lots of slipped stitches make this a quick knit. The lifted stitches are explained fully and I have videos on my Instagram and website if you need further assistance. The beginning of the round is moved every couple of rows to keep the motif intact. There are some tips for changing the size of the cowl throughout.
2 50g skeins of DK will be enough to complete this. Gauge isn’t important as long as you are happy with the size you are making. I recommend not having too loose a gauge as you are carrying the yarn up so you don’t want it to show through.
Low vision accessibility: there are 2 versions of the pattern that you get when you purchase. One is 11pt font and the other is 22pt font. The 22pt version also uses a black sans serif font, there are no italics and instructions are fully written. In addition, no abbreviations are used and the 22pt has been checked as accessible for screen readers.
