An all-over pattern and giant pompom give this Nordic hat a fun and updated look! Ample ribbing keeps this slightly slouched toque snugly in place, and the easy stranded pattern in two colors works up quickly in DK weight yarn. The soft, muted colors give this hat a vintage feel. Finish with a matching pompom for a warm and cozy winter accessory.

This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. It features ample ribbing and a Nordic stranded knitting pattern. The pattern is carried up into the crown decreases for a perfect finished look. The hat is topped off with a large pompom.

This pattern includes three sizes: child (up to 19” or 48cm head circumference), adult small (21” or 53cm head circumference), adult large (23” or 58cm head circumference).

The gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4” (10cm) in stockinette stitch. In stranded knitting pattern, the gauge is 24 stitches and 26 rows over 4” (10cm).

This pattern is recommended for intermediate knitters. You must be able to use basic stranded knitting techniques, follow a two-color chart, and work basic decreases (K2tog).

For the version featured here, I used Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Sport, 100% Peruvian highland wool, sport weight yarn. I love this versatile yarn because it easily works up to DK weight with a larger size needle (used here), and sport weight with a smaller size needle. You will need 2 balls of Thirst Heather #25960, and one ball of Oyster Heather #25276. You may substitute any DK weight yarn for this pattern. You will also need 16” (40cm) circular needles and double pointed needles in size US 5 (3.75mm) or whatever size necessary to get the gauge, and 16” (40cm) needles one size smaller for the ribbing.

This pattern includes a schematic, written instructions, and two-color charts for each size. Directions include measurements in inches and metric units.
