Succulents are a hot trend in home decor. With this pattern, you can crochet Hen & Chicks succulents (Sempervivum, or “Live-forever”) in three sizes: Small (2.5”/6 cm), Medium (3”/8 cm), and Large (4.5”/10 cm). You can make a quick, easy gift that is kid and pet friendly. Make a variety of colors, or make a variety of sizes in the same color for a clustered garden arrangement.

I have designed a set of crocheted pots that are the same size, shape, and color as real terracotta pots. This pattern includes instructions for three pots with soil bases that match the heights of standard clay pots: Small (1.75”/4 cm), Medium (2.25”/6 cm), and Large (3”/7.5 cm).

My pattern has another unique design feature: I designed the soil base to be removable--like a chocolate cupcake--rather than a circle sewn to the top of the pot. This soil insert gives the pot firm, straight sides and a flat base rather than bulging.

If you prefer to house your crocheted plant in a clay pot, use my pattern to crochet a soil base to fit inside a standard 1.75”, 1.25” or 3” inch pot. If you want to crochet different colored pots, you can pull the crocheted plant and soil out of the pot and transplant it into a new crocheted pot! It also makes great child’s toy: let your child play gardener and repot the plants, nest the pots together, or stack the pots up.

Pattern includes instructions for the following:

  1. Small Pot (1.75”/4 cm) and Soil Base
  2. Medium Pot (2.25”/6 cm) and Soil Base
  3. Large Pot (3”/7.5 cm) and Soil Base
  4. Hen & Chicks Succulent, Small: 2.5”/6 cm in diameter
  5. Hen & Chicks Succulent, Medium: 3”/8 cm in diameter
  6. Hen & Chicks Succulent, Large: 4.5”/10 cm in diameter
