Hereford Rose Shawl
BIRTHDAY PROMOTION!!!
To celebrate my birthday this month, I am offering a DISCOUNT of 40% across all my paid patterns until the end of the month. Use the coupon code BIRTHDAY at the checkout to get 40% off, valid until 31st August.
The Hereford Rose Shawl is a pattern I designed for my lovely friend Louise for her to wear to the Herefordshire wedding of her eldest daughter, Ann, as the proud mother of the bride!
Louise requested a fairly plain shawl with a lace border, and after looking through many different knitted lace patterns she was drawn to the traditional Shetland Lace stitch pattern ‘Rose Trellis’, which I then adapted as a border for her shawl.
The pattern uses 4ply (fingering weight) yarn and a solid colour is recommended, or two complimentary solid colours for knitters wishing to knit the lace section in a different colour.
The shawl is knitted flat: the construction begins with a garter tab cast on (explained in the pattern). The main stocking stitch body of the shawl is knitted next, with increases on each row to create the triangular shape, and then the lace border section follows, finishing with a couple of simple garter stitch rows before casting off.
SIZING
The shawl is presented in three size options:
Size 1 will make a medium sized shawl, with a wingspan of approximately 160 cm, and a height (measured along the central ‘spine’) of approximately 68 cm when blocked.
Size 2 will make a large sized shawl with a wingspan of approximately 180 cm, and a height of approximately 74 cm when blocked.
Size 3 will make an extra generous sized shawl with a wingspan of approximately 205 cm, and a height of approximately 80 cm when blocked.
YARN/NEEDLES/ GAUGE
The approximate amount of 4 ply/fingering weight yarn needed to make the shawl is as follows (if knitted at a gauge of 22 stitches x 32 rows per 10 cm stocking stitch square):
Size 1: 550 - 600 metres
Size 2: 700 - 800 metres
Size 3: 1000 - 1100 metres
There is also an option to work the lace section in a second colour. Yarn requirements for this option would be as follows (where yarn A is the main colour for the stocking stitch body, and yarn B is the contrast colour used for the Lace section):
Size 1: 375 metres of yarn A and 225 metres of yarn B.
Size 2: 450 metres of yarn A and 350 metres of yarn B.
Size 3: 650 metres of yarn A and 450 metres of yarn B.
A 3.75mm circular knitting needle with a cable length of 80 cm (Sizes 1/2) or 100 cm (Size 3) is needed.
As always, a huge thank you to my lovely testers: Amanda, Anne, Grace, Heather, Judith, Katrin, Mary, Mel and Rhian, and enormous thanks to my beautiful Admin Fairy, Helen, for editing the document and generally putting up with me! Xxx
