My Great Great Aunt Hermine lives in Sound of Music land Austria, & she frequently sends my family & I gorgeous colorwork mittens that she’s made by hand. These mittens are a large part of the reason why I wanted to learn to knit, & when I finally got to meet her a few years ago I brought her a pair I had made myself by kind of dissecting one of the pairs she sent me. This pattern is an updated version of those mittens, with simple construction & plenty of different colorwork charts to make a mitten that’s totally your own. If I did my math correctly, you can combine the back, palm, & thumb charts to make 21 different mitten designs! You can use fingering, sport, or worsted weight yarn to make a mitten that fits your hand just as you’d like. Enjoy!

SIZING
– All sizes are for adults; refer to measurements below to choose which size you’d like based on your hand width & the amount of preferred ease
– Tall: 7.25” hand circumference; 7.75” from top of cuff to top of mitten
– Grande: 9.25” hand circumference; 8.5” from top of cuff to top of mitten
– Venti: 9.75” hand circumference; 9” from top of cuff to top of mitten

FIBER
– Please note that each colorwork pattern varies slightly in the amount of yarn it requires; I have listed the largest amount out of caution
– Tall: MC: 115 yards fingering weight yarn; CC: 85 yards fingering weight yarn
– Grande: MC: 135 yards sport weight yarn; CC: 100 yards fingering weight yarn
– Venti: MC: 150 yards worsted weight yarn; CC: 120 yards worsted weight yarn

GAUGE
– All measurements are taken on the back colorwork stockinette section after blocking
– Tall: 15.75 sts & 15 rnds = 2 inches
– Grande: 12.25 sts & 14 rnds = 2 inches
– Venti: 11.5 sts & 13 rnds = 2 inches

SKILLS & NOTES
If you are confused or stuck, there are a lot of great tutorials online for all of these techniques!
– Directions for each size are exactly the same; the only thing that changes is the weight of yarn used
– Stranded colorwork: Don’t worry if your tension isn’t great while knitting! Blocking will smooth out any flaws.
– Reading charted instructions: Remember that since you are knitting in the rnd you will read each chart from right to left.
