Description
These hat and mittens are complementary accessories for the Heron Boxy Sweater and are knitted with its leftover yarn.
In this colorchart the heron is sitting still in the bushes, ready for his prey.
I designed my first season of knitwear under the title Amsterdam Bird Series. One of the herons we often meet is ‘Kareltje’. He always sits near the houseboat of ‘Stien’ a lady of 90+ years old. 12 O’clock sharp she gives him his daily lunch. You can see him waiting on the spot in the little snapshot and in my blog!
The hat and mittens are a tribute to this punctual guest.

Difficulty level
Intermediate.

Yarn
The light fine to dk yarn comes from a small German brand that is Ökotex Std 100 certified, 80% wool/20% linen, 300 m/100g (328 yds/100g). Colors for the hat: 1 skein dark grey (MC), 1 skein off white (CC1) and for the mittens: 1 skein dark blue (CC2), 1 skein yellow. Plenty other dk yarn options are possible.

Needles
3mm (US 3) DPNs or longer circular needle for magic loop.

Gauge
28 sts x 29 rows/rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4x4 in) in stockinette after blocking (tightly knitted fabric is preferable to facilitate colorwork knitting).

Size Information
Hat: circumference at brim band 53 cm (21 in) unstretched, 22 cm (9 in) in length from brim edge to crown; will fit head circumference of 50 to 58 cm (20 to 23 in). To adjust sizes an extra description is included below.
