Size does depend on the yarn used, the authors recommend to use up any yarn you have around. For the same reason, gauge does not really apply. Choose a needle size that results in a firm fabric, so the stuffing does not peek out.
You will need leftovers of black, yellow, soft pink, red, white and blue if you want to make one looking like the one in the book, and some stuffing.
