The Herring Jig Winter Hat is a cozy beanie/toque with a double brim for added stretch and warmth. It uses the Herringbone Double Crochet stitch to create a zigzag pattern that is broken up with horizontal ribbing.

It works up quickly and is great for any gender or age! Plus, the pattern includes instructions in case you need a size that falls between one of the written sizes.

Recommended yarns* Caron Simply Soft, Lion Brand Woolease, or other worsted/light worsted yarn. Thicker yarns will work great too, but will require adjusting hook size or stitch count to get the size you want.**

Sizes include:
• Newborn – Hat Band: 13.5” circumference (cm), Total Height: 4.5”
• Baby – Hat Band: 16” circumference (cm), Total Height: 6”
• Toddler – Hat Band: 17” circumference (cm), Total Height: 7.5”
• Child – Hat Band: 19” circumference (cm), Total Height: 8”
• Adult M – Hat Band: 20” circumference (cm), Total Height: 9”
• Adult L – Hat Band: 21” circumference (cm), Total Height: 9.5”

The amount of yarn you’ll need will vary depending on the size you make:
• Newborn: 50 - 60 yards (46 - 55 m)
• Baby: 80 – 90 yards (73 – 82 m)
• Toddler: 120 – 130 yards (110 - 119 m)
• Child: 130 – 140 yards (119 – 128 m)
• Adult M: 160 - 170 yards (146 – 155 m)
• Adult L: 190 - 210 yards (174 - 192 m)

A note about gauge. Personally, I use 5.00mm and 6.00mm hooks to get gauge, but all of the pattern testers needed to use smaller hooks to meet gauge and sizing so I’ve written the pattern with 4.50mm and 5.00mm hooks. Be sure to swatch first so you can make sure your gauge is looking good because it will affect the final size of the hat.
