The Traveling Earth Scarf 2023 is a year-long project coordinated by indie dyer Shobha of Serendipitous Wool, who has brought together 12 crochet designers from the US to the UK to create an Earth-inspired scarf. The scarf has literally traveled around the world to each designer to add on their section each month. Each section is worked up in 2 different colorways that Shobha has carefully curated for this project. I hope by working up this scarf, you feel a sense of community as you bring together 12 different designs by independent designers. I know I sure did!

My section of the scarf is called Hibernal. It was inspired by the transition from Fall to Winter, as the darkness of the night creeps up earlier in the day and the colorful foliage starts to fall and decay. As November’s section of the Traveling Earth Scarf, this inspiration felt very fitting for the season!

Materials

  • Serendipitous Wool Mata Mini, Weight 4 - Worsted (100% Superwash Merino Wool, 43 yards / 20 grams) - 2 skeins in different colors. The sample uses Ānanda (color 1) and Winters Heart (color 2).
  • US H-8 / 5 mm crochet hook, or hook that meets gauge
  • Stitch markers (at least 5, but these are optional)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Finished Measurements

This section of the Traveling Earth Scarf measures approximately 14” x 4.5” (unblocked).
