Hieronymus is a hybrid pixie/earflap/bonnet-style knit hat, made from sportweight sock yarn. Buttons are optional, mostly because I forgot to add them to the first three hats I made, and they seemed fine, but worth it if you want to wear the earflaps pinned up. Mitered corners and accelerating decreases show off a self-striping yarn to good effect, and colorful wool keeps the project interesting during a brief stockinette stretch.

(My samples are knit from a discontinued color Twilight in Regia 6-ply Design Line 50g, and from one skein of Regia 6-ply Color 150g in forest color/06364.) I think it will look good in handspun wool, too, especially with an interesting color design or a wool with natural color variation, like CVM or Shetland!

The main gauge is 20 sts and 28 rows in blocked stockinette; the pattern also offers gauge for garter stitch. Be sure to check your gauge; the fit depends on it.
