This is a digital pattern for a beginner friendly pattern using the spike stitch. Instructions are included for three sizes (baby, child, and adult) and detailed pictures on how to make the spike stitch.

Suggested yarn is Caron X Pantone by Yarnspirations (one braid for baby or child, two for adult size) but you can use any yarn (at least two colours) of bulky weight #5 or other to obtain gauge. Size 5mm and 6mm hook needed.

The pattern is made from the bottom to the top, with a stretchy form fitting brim and looser hat. You can add a pom pom if you desire but it is not required. Gender neutral pattern is suitable for both males and females.

------ Behind the Name -------

Growing up my family had a nightly tradition - while sitting around the dinner table my parent’s would say it was time for “HighLows!” Each person would share their high point of the day (or week if it had been a while), and their low point. In a world where it is increasingly more common to shut people out, this forced people to open up, share what they were excited about, and what was upsetting to them.

This beanie represents those HIGH points in our lives, and the LOW points. Our lives are filled with mountains and valleys, happy times and sad times. But no matter what, we are to keep going. Press forward, and climb to the top, and celebrate your HighLows.
