Hilma Mittens
The Hilma Mittens are my version of a perfect mitten. With interesting shaping and a well-fitted thumb gusset they are both fun to knit and a classic in any wardrobe.
Construction
The Hilma Mittens are worked top down using Judy’s magic cast on. First the hand and thumb are worked separately then the two pieces are joined and a comfortable gusset is created using decreases. The mittens are finished with a wide band of 2x2 rib.

How to pick a size
Measure around the widest point of the hand above the thumb. To get the best fit pick a size with up to 1.5 cm / 1/2 inch of positive ease.
Gauge
27 sts x 40 rows per 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches
Gauge swatch is worked in the round with Size A needles using stockinette st.
Suggested Needles
Size A 3 mm (40 cm) / US 4 (16 inches) circular needles or double-pointed needles
Size B 2.5 mm (40 cm) / US 2.5 (16 inches) circular needles or double-pointed needles
Or the needle size that gives you gauge.
Yarn Requirements
45 (50) 50 g of fingering weight yarn held together with 20 (25) 25 g of light fingering weight companion yarn.
The sample is worked with 1 thread Isager Alpaca 2 (250 m / 50 g) in the colorway 2s Eco and 1 thread Camarose Midnatssol (200 m / 25 g) in the colorway 9506.
