Children’s hats should be fun and playful. I chose to model this hat on a beehive. The hat itself is knitted in a beehive shape and finished with a bee dangling from an Icord. Since the design is so flexible, the pattern provides for different ways of finishing the crown, from a fanciful bee to a simple flat crown. The hat is suitable for a wide range of sizes and personalities.

You will need one skein of yarn in the primary color and several yards of black or a contrasting color for the bee dangle.

Techniques Used

  • German Twisted Cast On
  • Knitting in the Round
  • Icord
  • Simple striped colorwork

Additional Materials

  • Markers

  • Polyfil

The pattern provides both standard written directions and directions using a shorthand notation I developed. More information on this notation can be found at Mathematical Shorthand Notation.
