The first Hogwarts school uniforms consisted of gray flannel pants for the boys, pleated skirts for the girls, pullovers or cardigans trimmed in house colors with a matching tie, and a black robe with the house crest. Costume designer Judianna Makovsky based the robes on traditional academic dress, “with a small twist of sorts to give them wizard sleeves.” During later films, costume designer Jany Temime made changes, switching up fabrics and fibers and leaning toward a darker color palette. House colors lined the new robes, making it very clear which house each student belonged to.

An ideal beginner project for those who wish to show their house pride, these fingerless mitts, inspired by the Hogwarts uniforms, are worked flat from the bottom up, then seamed up along the side at the end, leaving an opening for the thumb. A classic 2 x 2 rib allows for stretch, while house colors are striped along the lower half the same way as the school uniforms.
