Holding Space Vessel
A little whimsy meets practicality with these knit vessels that use corrugated ribbing to create the contrast of color and texture.
The pattern is written for super bulky yarn (example Malabrigo Rasta) or light bulky (Malabrigo Mecha) weights; however, it is very adaptable. The needle size used for each weight is smaller that is normally used for the weight to create a denser fabric that can hold its shape.
- Super Bulky uses US 10.5 / 6.5mm
- Light Bulky uses US 7 / 4.5 mm
Within the pattern there are two patterns. Each can be knit into a more bowl shape, or a cylinder shape by adjusting number of rounds and decrease. The two versions are:
1) Step by Step Version: This gives a detailed process in making one style vessel for either yarn weight. It is divided into sections (1- top, 2 - middle, and 3 - bottom).
2) Free Range Pattern: This version gives several options with each of the three sections. The various choices, and combinations of the choices, enables endless looks.
The vessels, with the suggested cast on of 48 for super bulky and 72 for light bulky can be knit in the round with circular needles, using DPN at the decrease. Tension, yarn, and number of rounds knit will vary the size, as will increasing or decreasing the cast on. A Step by Step bowl will be approximately 4 - 6” across and 4 - 6” tall. Height can be increased with more rounds.
This pattern is best suited for a knitter who is an Advanced Beginner or higher. Skills used: knitting in the round, colorwork, corrugated ribbing (not hard but a little awkward at first), decreasing, and use of DPNs.
