Travel through the backwoods of Kentucky can be dangerous, but Hollis is careful, using the crochet skills his mother taught him. This handy felted satchel helps make his journeys not only easier but stylish as well. The design can be worked on a large hook then wet felted as shown. Or if you are not ready to try felting, work the same pattern on a much smaller hook for a tighter fabric that does not need to be felted.

Mother took the woolen satchel from where it hung over her shoulder. I’d watched her make it during the voyage, crocheting when she was strong enough. She’d fulled it with Ellie’s help just a few days ago, shrinking and binding the wool together so nothing would fall out of it. It was my favorite shade of indigo with an antler toggle to keep it closed. Excerpt from “The Kentuckian” by C. Jane Reid (Coming Summer 2016)
