The cable combination I chose for the front and back (body portions) of this piece came from a sweater my grandpa used to wear when I was a child. In a favorite photo of him, he is wearing it and I am three years old, sitting on his lap. In graduate school, I spent months working to recreate the sweater and still frequently wear the replica I finished (although now all I notice are the unnecessary seams that came from working it in pieces from the bottom up). For this new top-down version, I chose Walker’s Wave of Honey Cable stitch pattern (from A Treasury of Knitting Patterns), which matches the body perfectly, is deceptively easy to knit, and helps echo the heirloom feeling of the original.
