A perfect project for learning to make cables! This beanie has simple-to-execute cables, with links to video tutorials as well as cable instruction reminders right by the written directions (no need to flip back and forth between pages to look up C3L and C3R!). The pattern also includes handy tick boxes to help you keep track of your progress.

This project uses between 130 and 140 yards of Malabrigo Mecha or similar bulky yarn. I’ve made three so far using 135 yards each, and finished all three with yarn left over in each skein, even though the label on Mecha says it is only supposed to be 130 yards total. I guess they’re generous! One skein should be enough to make your hat unless you decide to make yours slouchy, but be especially careful to have extra on hand if you are working with hand-dyed yarn.

Notions:

• 4.5 mm (US 7) and 5.0mm (US 8) 16” circular needles
• 5.0 mm (US 8) double pointed needles, or size of larger circular needles NOTE: I have an average to slightly loose knitting tension. Some knitters may need to go up a needle size.
• 9 stitch markers (one should be different from the others to indicate beginning of round)
• cable needle or DPN smaller than your circular needles
• yarn needle
