Hoodoo (Blanket and Banner)
Hoodoo (inspired by the veve designs of Haitian Vodun).
This is a mosaic crochet pattern, no fancy stitches, suitable for beginners!
The symbols in this blanket are: Erzuli Freda (goddess of love and desire), Danballa (the rainbow serpent, representing wisdom and knowledge), and Baron Samedi (lord of the graveyards, represents new beginnings and protector from illness) along with other traditional design elements such as the drapeaux and points. All are good entities in the vodun pantheon!
My blanket version measures 46”x57” with envelope border. I used 4.5mm hook and 4/worsted weight yarn in black (1500yds) and various pastels with sparkle threads (approx. 1200 yards).
I am also bundling with my banner pattern if you want a smaller project! I used 4/worsted weight black yarn, I used DIY Glow yarn for the white and used less than 3 skeins (78yds each) leaving lots of ends for fringe. As I just used leftover black yarn I had laying around I don’t have a solid estimate for yardage, but I’ll guess around 300-350 yards? Mine final piece ended up about 17”x 24”.
Small charts, full large chart for KC, and written directions included, as well as some newbie tips!
