This sweater is a real hoot! Owls perch together around the body of this cardigan, showing off their plumage in bright autumn colors. The Hootenanny cardigan is worked flat from the bottom up to the underarms, sleeves are worked separately and attached, and then the raglan yoke is worked flat as one piece. Short rows shape the back neck for a comfortable fit. While the stranded knitting design calls for up to four colors at once, all shaping is done in one color only. A second version of the chart is included with only two colors per row, for those who choose to use the duplicate stitch method to add extra colors after knitting is complete.

This pattern includes 6 sizes, to fit a 32 (36.75, 39.5, 44, 48.75, 51)” or 81 (93, 100, 112, 124, 129.5) cm chest.

The gauge is 22 stitches and 24 rows over 4” (10cm) in stranded stockinette stitch, blocked.

This is an intermediate level pattern. Knitters should have experience with stranded knitting technique, long carries, and following color charts. Knitters will also use short rows, basic shaping techniques, and Kitchener Stitch technique. Since the owl motif in this pattern call for up to four colors in a row, some knitters may opt to use the duplicate stitch technique.

The recommended yarn for this pattern is Valley Yarns Deerfield (80% Baby Alpaca, 20% Silk; 109 yards/50g). You will need 8 (9, 10, 11, 13, 15) balls of Natural, and one ball each Soft Chestnut, Straw, Stone Blue, Black, Persimmon, and Deep Woods. You may substitute any DK weight yarn for this pattern.

You will also need 24” (60cm) circular needles and DPNs in size US 6 (4.0 mm), or size to obtain gauge, and 24” (60cm) circular needles in size US 5 (3.75 mm), or one size smaller than size to obtain gauge.

The sweater also calls for 6 (7, 7, 7, 8, 8) decorative buttons.

This pattern includes a schematic, full color chart, a two-color chart for optional duplicate stitch, written instructions, and notes on short row and Kitchener Stitch techniques.
