A customer in my Etsy store commissioned a hat for her nephew, and soon I began receiving requests from other customers for a Horsie Hat of their own. So I wrote the pattern down, but the original inspiration belongs to her.

The hat is knit from the top down, and uses 7 different colors of yarn. It can be finished with I-cord ties, or a braided tie made from the yarns used in the hat. I’ve made versions of both.

I’ve tried to knit this in superwash wool, but because it has no halo, the floats showed through, so if you’re going to substitute a different yarn, I recommend one with a halo. Or alternatively, you can use the Ladder Back Jacquard technique to catch your floats.

Because the hat is worked from the top down, I have numbered the chart from the top down as well. Make sure you start at the top, or your horse will be upside down when you finish your hat.
