In the upper parts of the Midwest we cook and serve hot dishes. They traditionally can be found at friend and family gatherings, community suppers, and regularly on individual family dinner tables. Wikipedia describes a hot dish as: A casserole dish that typically contains a starch, a meat, and a canned or frozen vegetable mixed with canned soup that must be served hot or warm. The Hot Dish Mitts pattern was inspired by these culinary delights because, like a hot dish, the knit includes a combination of ingredients - a worsted weight yarn held double with fingering weight yarns that are alternated to create a fun and interesting color combination.

My goals for designing these mittens was to create a pattern that is:

  • fun to knit using slipped stitches for a squishy knit and fun color texture
  • a knit that has the strong possibility of using up leftover scraps of yarn
  • mittens that are flexible, yet warm to wear on cold winter days

I hope you enjoy creating your own Hot Dish Mitts, and maybe even cook up a yummy hot dish for family and friends.
