This pattern is for a 9 to 10” square (depending upon tension) hot pad or pot holder.

Materials needed are: yarn, hook and needle.

Stitches Used: Chain, Slip, Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet, Crab (backward SC), Suzette (see below), and, Modified Bean (also below)

Suzette Stitch: These stitches are all performed in the same stitch: single crochet (SC), then double crochet (DC) in same stitch. Skip the next stitch.

Modified Bean Stitch: These instructions are all performed in the same stitch. With the loop from the prior stitch on your hook, yarn over (2 loops). Insert hook into stitch being worked. Yarn over (3 loops) and pull loop through stitch. Yarn over again (4 loops). Insert hook into stitch being worked. Yarn over (5 loops) and pull loop through stitch. Yarn over again (6 loops). Insert hook into stitch being worked. Yarn over (7 loops) and pull loop through stitch. Yarn over (8th loop) and pull through all 7 loops on hook. SC in the next stitch.

Note When Turning: When you reach the last stitch of each row, you will SC, chain 1 and turn. After turning, you will single crochet in the top of the last SC from the prior row.

PATTERN
Very loosely, Chain 28

  1. In 2nd chain from hook, begin Suzette Stitch until you reach the last chain. In the last chain, SC, chain 1 and turn. (13 Suzette Stitches and 1 SC)

  2. In first stitch, which is the top of the SC from the prior row, begin Suzette Stitch until you reach the last stitch. In the last chain, SC, chain 1 and turn (13 Suzette Stitches and 1 SC)

  3. Repeat 2 - In first stitch, which is the top of the SC from the prior row, begin Suzette Stitch until you reach the last stitch. In the last chain, SC, chain 1 and turn (13 Suzette Stitches and 1 SC)

  4. Repeat 2 - In first stitch, which is the top of the SC from the prior row, begin Suzette Stitch until you reach the last stitch. In the last chain, SC, chain 1 and turn (13 Suzette Stitches and 1 SC)

  5. In the first stitch, which is the top of the SC from the prior row, SC and continue SC all the way across. After the last SC, chain 1 and turn. (27 SC and 1 Chain) Note: You can also do back loop, front loop or 3rd loop SC here.

  6. In the first stitch, which is the top of the SC from the prior row, SC. In the next stitch, Modified Bean Stitch until you reach the last two stitches. SC in the last two stitches. After the second SC, chain 1 and turn. (12 Modified Bean Stitches, 3 SC, 1 chain)

  7. Repeat 6 - In the first stitch, which is the top of the SC from the prior row, SC. In the next stitch, Modified Bean Stitch until you reach the last two stitches. SC in the last two stitches. After the second SC, chain 1 and turn. (12 Modified Bean Stitches, 3 SC, 1 chain)

  28. Repeat 2 - In first stitch, which is the top of the SC from the prior row, begin Suzette Stitch until you reach the last stitch. In the last chain, SC, chain 1 and turn (13 Suzette Stitches and 1 SC)

Note: at this point, your pot holder/hot pad is one row of stitches taller than it is wide. The border will make it square. Your border is worked in the round. Each instruction below is specific to a “side” of your work.

First Round of Border:

  1. Repeat 5 above EXCEPT when you get to the last SC, do not chain 1 and turn. Chain 2 and rotate your work to the next adjacent side. (26 SC and 2 chains)

  2. SC in the same stitch as the SC, chain 2 from the prior side. This creates your second corner. SC over your starting chain yarn tail. Continue SC along this side. When you reach the last stitch, SC, chain 2 and rotate your work to the next adjacent side. (28 SC and 2 chains)

  3. SC in the same stitch as the SC, chain 2 from the prior side. This creates your third corner. Continue SC along this side. When you reach the last stitch, SC and chain 2, and rotate your working to the next adjacent side.(27 SC and 2 chains)

  4. SC in the same stitch as the SC, chain 2 from the prior side. This creates your fourth and final corner. Slip stitch into the starting SC and chain one. Do not turn (1 SC, SS, 1 Chain)

Second Round of Border:

  1. Continuing in the round, SC in the top of the SC from the last row. SC across the top, with your 27th SC being in the ch2 space from the prior round. Chain 1 and rotate your work to the adjacent side. (27 SC, 1 chain)

  2. Half Double Crochet (HDC) in the same 2 chain corner space as the SC from other side you just completed. HDC across the side, with your 30th HDC being in the ch2 space from the prior round. Chain 1 and rotate your work to the adjacent side. (30 HDC, 1 chain)

  3. SC in the same 2 chain corner space as the HDC from the side you just completed. SC across this side with your 29th SC being in the ch2 space from the prior round. Chain 1 and rotate your work to the adjacent side. (29 SC, 1 chain)

  4. HDC in the same 2 chain corner space as the SC from the other side you just completed. HDC across the side with your 30th HDC bringing he ch2 space from the prior round. Chain 1 and rotate your work to the adjacent side - this is the side you started this round. (30 HDC, 1 chain)

  5. SC in the same 2 chain corner space as the HDC from the side you just completed. SC two more times and SS to your starting SC. Chain 1. (3 SC, SS, 1 chain)

Third/Last Round of Border: Crab stitch into each SC/HDC/chain all the way around. Sew in your end.

If you would like, add a loop to a corner. I SC around two pieces of yarn affixed to one corner.
