Humpy the humpback whale
A knitting pattern for a very realistic humpback whale, which is around 33 cm/13 in long and 9 cm/3.5 in wide. A fun challenge for experienced knitters.
Included in the pattern:
- pdf with a total of 16 pages
- very detailed step-by-step written instructions, tons of pictures, and helpful tips
- dedicated video tutorial to navigate around the more unusual passages of the pattern
- video tutorials for all other knitting techniques are available (on my blog)
Difficulty:
Experienced knitter
This humpback whale pattern is geared towards experienced knitters. Seen by themselves, most rows aren’t especially overwhelming. Rarely will you hold more than 40 stitches on your needles and the complicated stitches referenced below are few and far between. However, seaming such a complex shape with various different edge stitches is the true challenge. With a bit of patience and good lighting, I’m very sure I can guide you through these finicky passages.
Yarn and yardage:
While you can more or less ignore my gauge, I really recommend a slightly fuzzy yarn where the stuffing won’t peak through. Knitting this humpback whale with bigger needles and a heavier yarn will result in a much bigger specimen.
I used the Yak and Yeti blend Greenery Wolle (merino 60%, silk 20%, yak 20%; 100 g = 366 m/400 yds) and needed 25 g of the dark blue, 15 g of the white color, and 5 g of the grey tone.
Skills required:
You will need to know how to knit, purl, KLL, KRL, k2tog, SSK, p2tog, SSP, M1l, M1R, K3tog cent, stacked increases and decreases, 2-colored brioche stitch & brioche increases/decreases, longtail cast-on, knitted cast-on, and the provisional cast. Step-by-step slow-motion tutorials for all techniques are available on my blog.
Additional materials:
- 2 safety eyes
- toy stuffing
