Inspired by the architectural work of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser —especially the KunstHausWien—this sock design aims to capture the curving lines, checkered tiles, and organic forms of Hundertwasser’s buildings.

The socks are knitted top-down from cuff to toe, beginning with a folded cuff and continuing with stranded colorwork in the round. The short row heel is worked using a wrap-and-turn method, and the toe is shaped by decreases and then grafted together.

Materials

Needles:

  • 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles
  • 2.0 mm (US 0) circular needles

Note: This pattern was designed to be knitted in the round on 80 cm circular needles using the magic loop technique and instructions are written accordingly, but feel free to adjust for a different length cord or DPNs if that is your preference.

Yarn:

This pattern was designed to be knitted using Gründl Hot Socks Uni in Schwarz/Black as a contrast color (abbreviated as CC) and the self-striping sock yarn Opal Hundertwassers Werk in Blue Blues as a main color (abbreviated as MC).

The following quantities are required:

  • CC: 21 g / 89 m / 98 yds (26 g / 110 m / 121 yds, 32 g / 135 m / 148 yds)
  • MC: 35 g / 149 m / 163 yds (44 g / 187 m / 205 yds, 54 g / 230 m / 252 yds)

The socks can also be made with any other light fingering, fingering or sport weight yarn that can achieve the correct gauge.
