This is a pattern to add a hood to anything! Instructions are given for putting a hood on a pullover, cardigan, or cowl/scarf, and a full pattern is included for the hooded scarf.

The main body of the hood is worked simply, flat, with some increases at the bottom, in stockinette with garter stitch at the sides. Once you reach the hood height, you’ll work the top panel, which is back and forth with decreases on each side to form the top shaping. When you reach the garter stitch edging at the front, you’ll work a final sideways garter stitch strip across the front of the panel to join everything together, finishing that off with a short bit of grafting. The whole hood is made without any yarn breaks (unless you’re changing colors).

For just a hood add-an, you need any weight yarn, approx as much as you’d need for a large fold-up brim hat. For a whole hooded scarf, you need any weight yarn (worsted–bulky is recommended)—yardage will vary greatly by weight and how long and wide you make your scarf. And you’ll need needles sized to match your yarn to get a fabric you like, for working flat—a circular needle 32”/80cm or longer is recommended; a long circular is needed if adding hood to a pullover; the longest circular cord you have is best for the full scarf (ideally 60”/152cm).
