I didn’t set out to make a Hydra pattern, but some things are meant to be! This pattern started as a one-time make for a friend, but I ended up falling in love with the design and decided to turn it into a complete pattern. This three-headed Hydra is inspired by the later-generation Thunder Hydra models in World of Warcraft, with four sauropod-style legs and a strong, thick body. There’s also a bonus aquatic version with flippers if that’s more your style!

**Materials**

This pattern is made in a single weight of yarn, so it can easily be adapted for a lighter or chunkier yarn as you wish. Just be sure to use the right hook to make your stitches nice and tight so no stuffing shows through.

Yarn amounts: Will vary depending on your yarn weight and hook size, as well as which decoration options you choose.
The pink-orange-red Hydra in the cover image was made with Sirdar Jewelspun Aran “Sunstone Amber” and a 3.5mm hook. I used approximately 265yds
The grey and rainbow “Pride-ra” was made with Sirdar Jewelspun Chunky “Mother of Pearl” and a 4.5mm hook, and used the entire ball (328yds).
Testers working with lighter worsted weight yarn (like Prismatic Fiber & Artistry’s merino/nylon worsted yarn) and a 3mm hook used approximately 200yds.
Testers working with thicker worsted yarn and a 3.5mm hook used approximately 275yds.

3.5mm hook or whatever size is appropriate for your yarn and stitch tension. Note that larger hook sizes will use more yarn.

Plastic stitch markers for marking specific stitches.

Polyfill stuffing.

Safety eyes (I used 14mm eyes for the worsted weight Hydra and 18mm eyes for the chunky Hydra).

Floral stem wire and armature wire:
I prefer to use armature wire (usually 12 gauge) in the body because it is more flexible.
I use 18 gauge Decora floral stem wire (NOT paper-wrapped) in any limbs or wings because it provides more rigid support.

Blunt needle for sewing.

Needlefelting needle for securing ends and decorative work.

Optional: 18mm flat round cabochons to insert in feet to keep them flat.

Optional: Decorative options like rhinestones, 3D-printed horns, or accent colors of yarn.
