I Dream of Beanie
I love Fair Isle. Some of my first designs were in this style. So I have decided to go back to my roots!
This magical beanie is a great design with 4 sizes and options so you can craft the beanie to suit you.
I love it and hope you do to.
The beanies in the pictures have been created using my own dyed yarn ‘The House Dye’. We have packs available for purchase if you like.

Techniques
This pattern uses knit, purl and simple increases and decreases.
On some rows I would recommend catching some of the floats (over 5 stitches between colours) but I have kept this to a minimum. There are many videos showing the method. I also used a provisional cast one. My favourite is Judy’s Provisional Cast on using two circular needles. Again this can be looked up on YouTube.
At the end of the brim construction you will be required to pick up the stitches and knit them with the corresponding stich in the working round.
Yarn
This pattern is written based on a 8ply (DK) yarn.
You will need main colour 60 to 75g. Contrast colour 35 to 40g. I usually have a skein of each (100g) but it is more than enough. I opt for a variegated yarn for my contrast, this is up to you, it gives a great look.
(Note, weights are all approximate as depends on yarn structure and personal tension )
Gauge
This pattern is has been written for a 8ply (DK) weighted yarn, typically 22 stiches x 28 rows (10cm x 10 cm with 4mm needles, stockinette). This will depend on personal tension.
Materials
A 4mm circular needle (or needle to achieve gauge). I recommend a 50mm or 60mm (that is total length of cable and needles, size may vary depending on the brand you use). You will then need the normal army of accessories, stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle and any other handy implements you like to use in your knitting!!
When decreasing the crown it is your choice on the method to use when the beanie gets too small for your circular needle. I use two circular needles (look it up it is a great way of decreasing and gives a great finish), or you can use a set of double pointed needles, magic loop or any other sorcery of choice.
Sizing
Included in the pattern are sizing for a small, medium, large and extra large.
You can alter the pattern sizing for different to the above. Increase or decrease in multiples of 12. Instructions for different sizes are shown in the pattern
Options included in the pattern
Option 1: Additonal repear for large and extra large sizes, or to include if you just want a longer beanie.
Option 2: When you come to the decrease, you can use the main colour, or the contrast colour depending on the look you want. This will alter the quantities of yarn as stated.
