If you’re like me and you’ll look for any excuse for more Madelinetosh yarn, look no further! This inventive winter hat is a great excuse to stock up on lavish amounts of brightly colored yarn, or knit an entire hat out of stash scraps. It is knit flat but seamed as it is knit.

The pattern includes links to YouTube tutorials for each step of the hat, including the seaming stitch and a method for weaving in ends as you knit.

The sizing for the hat will vary with the yarn used, so the pattern is best worked in stretchy wools. Swatch on size US 6 / 4mm needles to get 16sts and 22 rows in 4 inches, then decide whether you’d like a small, snug hat, or a looser, larger hat by sizing your needles down or up. The hat will probably look small until it is blocked, but it will stretch!

The pattern calls for six colors of yarn. You’ll need:

  • 40 yards of the color that you plan to use for the brim
  • 20 yards of each of the other five colors.

Other materials include a tapestry needle and double pointed needles in the same size as the body of the hat.
