I set out to design a knee sock that would be simple yet ornate, that would accommodate my large calves and still stay up, and that I could wear with most of my wardrobe.

These socks are worked from the top down, beginning with k1, p1 rib to keep them up and changing to a 2 by 2 rib that flows seamlessly into the cable pattern at mid calf. The simple rope cable continues down the leg and into the gusset shaping seamlessly.

The pattern includes 5 sizes to fit calves from 12 to 22 inches (30-55 cm).

The cable pattern in these socks reminds me of elves so I gave them a name from Tolkien, Idril. Although they may seem challenging, they are actually quite simple and enjoyable to knit.
