This year we’ve had a lot of decorating in the house and for the winter season I wanted lots of jolly new Gnomes to match our new lighter, brighter interior.

In the summer I made some knitted lanterns to light up the garden using old jars. That inspired me to make some winter versions, and the Gnome shape lends itself to wine and beer bottles very well. These make a great way to present a bottle of wine as a gift- give them the LED lights too and instructions for how to make the lamp once they’ve drunk the wine. I love these in winter colours like dark greens and blues, but also made a purple version for my sister and a ‘santa’ version in a brighter red.

The lights for these are LEDs with the switch and batteries in a cork shaped holder. These are widely available online and very cheap, with options for white or coloured lights. or you can use any other sort of LED lights.

I’ve given sizes for a standard wine bottle and a 9 inch high beer bottle. I’ve also given instructions on how to customise to fit any other size bottle you have.

I used Robin double Knit and Sirdar Funky fur for the beards but any double knitting (light worsted) weight yarn will do.

The pattern is in my Gnome Your Home ebook, along with other Gnome related patterns you may like.
