In the olden days Austrian knitters handed down their patterns from generation to generation, not written down, but in knitted stripes of pattern samples. Garments were designed with mixtures of these, so using the same method of construction every one was a very individual display of art and skill!

I assembled this particular design for a test knit of an all natural fiber yarn, which seems to be made for this kind of tradition. Any other yarn with approximately 100g = 400m and a gauge of 34 stitches per 10 cm should work nicely.

These socks are knitted from double ribbing down with a heel cap up to toes, where the last 20 stitches are closed with an invisible seam. Because this is my first written down pattern for socks, this pattern is for size EU 39 / US 8 / UK 6 only.

I hope you enjoy your excursion into traditional Austrian sock knitting!
