IRL = in real life

A collaboration with Heather of Earl Grey Fiber Company, IRL is a celebration of meeting up with close friends in real life, whether it’s for the first time or one of many. Perfect for social knitting, IRL is a simple, customizable pattern that results in a beautiful and super wearable shawl. I wanted to design something that highlighted Heather’s Camellia non- superwash organic merino yarn in both fingering and DK weight, so I came up with a pattern that works with any weight yarn! Releasing at Wool & Folk 2022, this pattern will surely become one you knit and gift over and over.

This squishy triangle shawl is worked from the center top down, with increases worked on the outer edges and along the center spine to form the classic triangle shape. Simple garter stitch, ribbing, and eyelets repeat to form a subtle but graphic pattern.

This pattern is written to work at any gauge! YES. ANY GAUGE! Any weight yarn! This means, however, that the size of your shawl will likely vary from mine. I’ve included schematics for my three samples as well as stitch counts for every repeat up to 20 repeats.

For results that look most similar to the samples, choose a tonal or solid colorway on a non-superwash or more rustic yarn base with similar yardage that feels comfortable against your skin. Any yarn, however, will result in a beautiful shawl! Lighter colors will show off the patterning better. Superwash yarns will have more drape, non-superwash yarn will have more structure.

The needle sizes below are just recommendations. If you’re a tight knitter, go up. If you’re a loose knitter, go down. Trust your instinct and your experience, and if you’re totally unsure, pIck the size in the middle. If you don’t like the fabric you’re creating, you can always start over with a different needle!
