The inspiration for the Island Rose Shawlette was from a photo of a Shetland lace shawl in a knitting book I read over 30 years ago. Intrigued with the stitch pattern, I deciphered it using a magnifying glass, and then designed and knit a shawl for a family christening.

When I recently came across the photo of the christening shawl, once again having no charts to guide me, out came the magnifying glass – very handy for knitting detectives!

The main stitch patterns in the Island Rose Shawlette are elongated hexagons that are separated by the traditional Shetland ‘Rosebud’ pattern.

There are two stitch patterns used on the outside borders of the shawl (on left). The inner edge border is a simplified version of the main shawl stitch pattern. The outer edge scalloped border is inspired by the ‘Traditional Peaked Shawl Edging’, a garter stitch pattern. (pg 76, Heirloom Knitting by Sharon Miller).
