The idea of this crochet red horn came to me after a trip to Naples. Naples is a fantastic city, full of history and culture. I visited San Gregorio Armeno and as tradition want I could not return home without some “cornicelli”, i.e. the italian horn amulets. You can not leave Naples without a lot of little horns to give to the people you care about. Hence the idea of crocheting them with lisle thread and so I started to create it trying to reproduce the shape of those Neapolitans. I lost count of the times that I did and undo the work to find the right combination of stitches that would allow me to recreate all the humps and bends because it had to be as the tradition want, i.e. “Tuosto, stuorto and cu ‘a ponta“ ( Hard, bandy and with a tip ). In the end these are the result of my tests.

This pattern show how to do a little good luck red horn 3 cm/ 1,18 in high. This size may vary based on the yarn and crochet hook size used. You will crochet it in rounds closing every round with a slip stitch on the starting stitch.

Materials:

  • cotton yarn nº12 ~175m
  • crochet hook nº1 mm /US 11
  • polyester fiber filler
  • needle
  • scissors
  • (optional) magnifying glass

Due to the fineness of the yarn I used a magnifying glass to help me in the work.

The pattern is suitable for an intermediate level of crochet knowledge. You should know basic crochet stitches including chain, slip stitch, single crochet, increase, sc2tog and how to start with a magic ring.
