Winters here in CT are cold and yet most of my coats are double breasted, leaving neck and upper chest exposed. Cowls are nice but still not long enough for coverage.
So I designed this cowl/neckerchief by extending the shape to cover the exposed area.

Simple enough to work easily, with a 12 stitch lace panel to keep it interesting.

The width can easily be adjusted by adding less or more stitches at the time joining in the round to customize the fit around the neck.
