This gorgeous cabled gansey - aptly named the January Gansey for one of the coldest, darkest months of the year - is a nod to my seafaring ancestors, and to my mad love for the sea.

About the sweater:

My January Gansey features gorgeous stair-step cables, with a traditional boat neck, and underarm/shoulder gussets for a comfortable fit around the arms and shoulders for any gender. This design brings you time-honored style with a modern fit (you’ll have three gauge options to choose from - 24, 25 or 26 st in 4 in/10 cm), so you can adjust your fit based on the yarn you’ve selected). The pattern recommends sport or DK weight knit at a dense gauge - you can decide whether to go with natural wool for a traditional style, or a blend of fibers, superwash or non-superwash, depending on your preference. It’s a very versatile style - use what you love!

PLEASE NOTE: THE PATTERN WILL BE UPDATED TO YOUR RAVELRY LIBRARY ON 12/31/18. From now through December 30th, you will receive only the pattern info sheet with all the details to participate in the 8-week email workshop and KAL. The KAL kicks-off January 1st. You will not receive the pattern until December 31st. However, you will receive information about yarn, gauge and yardage, and you will be invited to join our exclusive KAL community on Facebook right away. My private Facebook community is one of the most amazing knitting support groups you’ll ever find and we’d love to have you.

The KAL period kicks off January 1st (with the pattern available a day early) and runs for 8 weeks. KAL registration ends February 1st (this means that, due to the 8-week email workshop format, you will not be able to join the KAL after February 1st - the KAL period will run for 8 weeks from the time you join).

Here’s what you’ll experience in the 8-week KAL:

  • Weekly emails with written, photo and video tutorials to support you every step of the way (every Monday morning for 8 weeks during the KAL)
  • Exclusive access to our private KAL pop-up group (only available during the KAL) where you can hang out with me and our best knitting friends as we knit our ganseys together (this is a separate group from my main Knitters’ Lounge FB Knitting Community - just for those participating in the KAL)
  • Special KAL discounts from our fiber friends at yarn shops and yarn companies from all over!

Basic Questions? You can ask them in the Olive Knits Knitters’ Lounge. (Just request to join and tell them you learned about the group here.)

The workshop will include:

Week 1: Prep Week - Yarn, Swatching, Gauge and Sizing
Week 2: Hips, Body & Length Considerations
Week 3: Underarm Gussets & Transitioning to Working Flat + Fit Check
Week 4: Navigating Challenges + Russian Grafting
Week 5: Shoulder Gussets + Neckline
Week 6: Picking-Up Sleeve Stitches + Sleeve Length/Tips
Week 7: Weaving-In Ends + Closing Gaps + More Gansey Traditions

After February 1st the January Gansey pattern will be available individually for $9.00, with the workshop available as a separate e-book beginning in March ($12.99 for the pattern + workshop, or $9.00 for the individual pattern and $3.99 for the individual workshop, if purchased separately).

US Size 3/3.25mm 32-40 in/80-100 cm(stockinette/hip area)
US Size 4/3.5mm 32-40 in/80-100 cm (cables/main body)
US Size 2/2.75mm 16 in/40 cm(neck ribbing)
US Size 4/3.5mm DPNs (or same size used for cable section)
--You will also need a crochet hook the same size or smaller (in mm) than the knitting needle size you use for your cables.

Or as needed to establish gauge appropriate to your yarn, and to create a relatively dense fabric

Sport or DK Weight knit at a dense gauge. Sample used Abundant Earth Romney Wool (non-superwash) 240 yards in 100g. Despite the smaller gauge, do not be tempted to substitute a fingering weight yarn – it will not have the proper density for this design. Additional caution: Do not use “suggested gauge” listed on yarn band as a guide – it does not apply here.
