These mittens were inspired by the poem “Warning” by Jenny Joseph: “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple…”

The circular pattern is reminiscent of a compass rose - because we all need a good compass in navigating our lives!

This is a 58-stitch mitten. The original sample was knitted on DK weight yarn with 3.00mm (US 2.5) needles to yield a mitten that is 10 inches long with a 7.5-inch circumference and a 2.5-inch cuff and a gauge of 15 stitches and 16 rows per 2 inch square. Change the size by changing the gauge.

Note: In testing the two colors used were fairly even - around 45% CC to 55% MC.

Here is a great video for picking up stitches in a mitten thumb that doesn’t leave a gap that needs to be sewn in later. In this video, you pick up the stitches, and then decrease them out. For my pattern, you’ll just work them.
