Jotunheimen (pronounciation: ˈjuːtʉnˌhæimən) is the fifth piece of neckwear in a collection inspired by the astounding nature in the Sogn og Fjordane region of Norway: first was Fanaraaken, second was Molden, third was Myrhorn, the fourth was Feigefossen. The inspiration for this design is Jotunheimen, the impressive mountain range that extends from south-central to western Norway. This mountain range is known as the home of the jotuns (a race of giants) and plays a central role in Norse Mythology and Folklore. You will recognize it from the films featuring the Marvel character Thor, the newly released Nordic film, The Ash Lad, as well as the classical music composed by Norway’s Edvard Grieg.

This cowl features a textured motif which is an artistic interpretation of the five highest peaks of Jotunheimen (Galdhøpiggen, 8,100.4 ft; Glittertind, 8087.3 ft; Store Skagastølstind, 7890.4 ft; Store Styggedalstinden, 7831.4 ft; and Skarstind, 7798.6 ft) and the innermost arm of Sognefjord which reaches towards this majestic mountain range:

The cowl is knit flat, introducing a triangular inset of 5 unique, single color, textures for each subsequent mountain profile. A range of textures from lace to garter, to eyelet, to shadow knitting and, finally, cable are applied; both a chart and written instructions are provided for each of the five motifs. Knitting concludes with a band of color in simple stockinette which is picked up and knit along the cast on edge and then joined to the opposite end with Kitchener stitch to bring the cowl into full circle. (Alternately a provisional cast-on may be used.)

While the design is relatively simple, using only one color at a time in relatively uncomplicated textured patterns, I am identifying it as an intermediate level project because of the use of charts, picking up stitches, and grafting.

Yarn Requirements
2 colors of solid color sport weight yarn:
MC = 478-548 yds
CC = 37-40 yds using US 5 circular needle (knit flat)
NB: a striping or variegated yarn could be used for the CC, but because of the textured work with MC, that portion should be knit using a solid color.

Finished measurements are 14” wide and 56” circumference.

Techniques/Skills
Cast on (provisional or cast on of choice, if the latter then stitches will need to be picked up along the cast on edge), knit, purl, 1/1 rc (right cable), Kitchener grafting stitch, k2tog, k2togtbl, k3tog, sl, Stst, YO, flat knitting. Pattern includes notes regarding techniques/skills; additional support provided on my linked website.
